Two windows

She calmly pushes a vacuum back-and-forth with a look of perfection. Her hair, a brunette bob, refuses to submit to her movements. A proper sleeveless dress of fuchsia wool conservatively begins at her neckline and tapers at the waist. Although it’s obstructed by the wood exterior of her home, I’m sure that her hemline continues down her Barbie Doll legs and rests just past the knee – a proper dress indeed.

I just couldn’t help but notice her through the window – so inviting and welcoming. She seems beautiful and lonely surrounded by bare, canary walls and dancing a waltz with an appliance. I wonder who she is.

Drawing my gaze outward to take in the rest of the view, I step back into my own world. The neighbors look nice. Their house, slightly dated and weathered, sits on a hill just along-side this one and is separated by a sloping driveway peppered with large stones.

Beneath what is soon to be my own window, a handful of pine trees stand tall and alert like the Foot Guards of Buckingham Palace. I’m confident that these beastly pines are well prepared to shield our room from any blaring afternoon sunlight.

I have to tell you, this window is quite impressive. Its reach extends from floor to ceiling and wall to wall like a beaming gem. Impossible to forget, it’s not just another fixture between these unloved and abandoned walls. I don’t doubt for a second that the endless silent films, picturesque moons and soothing rainstorms are all that we need to turn this drab apartment into a home.

Oh, how lovely this will be when we finally move in.

I love the way your lips curl up when you’re happy
like I’m floating in a hammock sipping sweet tea.
This spark that hits me when our eyes meet,
it tickles me & I sink deeper into your endless universe.
Your loveable, charming smile is contagious.
It catches me the way a yawn sets off millions to follow.

I will rest on your confidence with a great sigh of relief
& my heart will find peace on your soft pillow of dreams.
I will highlight these beautiful moments with a fat yellow marker,
and bookmark each smile of yours in my brain.
Then I will scroll through the blissful memories again and again.
For you give me something sweet enough to last forever.

I love you, my darling familiar soul.
Your worth is as great as the Lord has told.
Your inspiring pieces resemble a whole.
I was drawn from a puddle and placed in your bowl.

Your portrait, asleep, is awake in my mind,
But to follow is cheap when there’s nothing to find.
For the angels requested have long been assigned,
And a love, never-ending, is that which will bind.

Hope is a sunrise

Dawn is coming. The sky is barely purple, lit just enough to see the path ahead. We race to the top of a grassy knoll and gaze out into the horizon at a hill lined with one-story homes and families still sleeping. We’re there.

I reach out my hands to grab ahold of the first bar and begin to climb. Feeling the wood corner posts beneath my fingers and hurling my weight forward, I climb to the top of an old jungle gym. The higher I climb, the more I can see. Looking back, we lock eyes and begin to laugh. It reminded me of a time when life was simple and we were free to play in the dark. Our giggling echoes through the town.

The first peek of light begins to surround us. At the highest point, I gather myself and begin to stand across the metal pipe. Letting go of all fear and with a smile, I close my eyes and straighten my legs. My arms extend out on each side – a full stretch like a starfish. I lean into the wind that gently pushes me back as it glides past me with a soft caress. There is no way I could fall. Not with you safely spotting me below. When I open my eyes – a peachy light unrolls across the grey blue sky and I am filled with a calm excitement. This is it – joy, peace and comfort. Thank you, Lord.

I curl down and return my hands to metal. As we exchange smiles, we trade places. Your turn!
